Burchell´s Zebra

Baboon

Baboons are intelligent and cunning. They live in groups and display a highly developed form of social behavior. Height at shoulder: approx. 39 inches (100cm). Weight: approx. 40 pounds (20kg). Age: up to 45 years

 

Giraffe

The tallest land mammal reaching in excess of 18 feet. It has a majestic walk and even when it runs, seems to be in slow motion. Height at shoulder: approx. 350cm, Weight: approx. 3,000 pounds (1500kg), Age: up to 28 years, Speed: 31 mph (50km/h).

 

Nile Crocodile

The largest reptile on earth and the oldest surviving creatures. Crocodiles have been around for more than 60 million years. Height at shoulder: approx. 16 inches (40cm). Weight: approx. 2,200 pounds (1000kg). Good length: 15 feet (5m).

 

Kudu

The Kudu is truly a majestic animal. The magnificent horns, borne only by the males, are spread in beautiful open spirals. They live in small herds of 5 to 10. They can leap up more than 8 feet (2.5m). Height at shoulder: approx. 59 inches (150cm). Weight: approx. 660 pounds (300kg). Age: up to 15 years. Good horn length: 54 inches (127cm).

 

Eland

The largest antelope in southern Africa. They have excellent senses and are very difficult to approach when alerted. Both males and females bear horns, but the horns on bulls tend to be more massive and shorter than a cow's elongated and slender horns. They live in herds of up to 60. They can leap remarkably high, up to 8 feet (2.4m). Height at shoulder: approx. 66 inches (170cm). Weight: approx. 1,400 pounds (650kg). Age: up to 12 years, Good horn length: 38 inches (97cm).

 

Roan Antelope

The roan is the second largest of the antelope (only eland is larger) and resembles the sable in some ways. Height at shoulder: approx. 58 inches (150cm). Weight: approx. 625 pounds (285kg). Age: up to 19 years, Good horn length: 27 inches (69cm).

 

Sable Antelope

The sable with its regal bearing is one of Africa’s most beautiful antelope. Its heavily ringed horns rise vertically and sweep back in a semicircular curve. The bulls are black with white underparts. In Afrikaans it is called “swartwitpens” or "black-white belly". Both sexes bear horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 54 inches (140cm). Weight: approx. 450 pounds (220kg). Age: up to 19 years. Good horn lenght 40 inches (101cm).

 

Cape Hartebeest

Also known as the red hartebeest, they have a docile appearance but are extremely fast runners who can maintain their pace for long distances. Both sexes bear horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 51 inches (130cm). Weight: approx. 355 pounds (160kg). Age: up to 20 years, Speed: 40 mph (65km/h). Good horn length 24 inches (61cm).

 

Tsessebe

The tsessebe strongly resembles the red hartebeest. It is the fastest African antelope, reaching speeds of up to 60 mph (96km/h), and can run 7 miles (11km) and be as fresh as it was from the start. Height at shoulder: approx. 47 inches (120cm). Weight: 350 pounds (160kg). Age: up to 20 years. Good horn length 15 inches (38cm).

 

Oryx/Gemsbok

Both sexes bear horns, those of the cow being longer and slimmer. They live in herds of up to 40 animals and can survive without water for long periods. They are aggressive and always ready for a fight. Wounded animals can be dangerous. Height at shoulder: approx. 47 inches (120cm). Weight: approx. 440 pounds (200kg). Age: up to 19 years, Good male horn length 38 inches (97cm).

 

Waterbuck

Waterbucks are stately looking beasts with well-ringed horns, which are borne by males only. They generally are found close to water. The ringed or southern waterbuck bears a peculiar white marking on its rump that would suggest that the prototype waterbuck sat on a freshly painted toilet seat. Height at shoulder: approx. 51 inches (130cm). Weight: approx. 550 pounds (250kg). Age: up to 12 years, Good horn length 28 inches (71cm).

 

Blue Wildebeest

Also known as brindled gnu, it is ox-like in build and has buffalo-like horns. It lives in herds and is often seen with zebras, impalas and giraffe. Height at shoulder: approx. 52 inches (135cm). Weight: approx. 550 pounds (250kg). Age: up to 20 years, Good horns spread 28 inches (71cm).

 

Black Wildebeest

It is smaller than its "blue" cousin. Also known as black-tailed gnu.  Its natural habitat is the highveld and the Karoo regions of South Africa. Height at shoulder: approx. 47 inches (120cm). Weight: approx. 400 pounds (180kg), Age: up to 20 years, Good horn spread 22 inches (56cm).

 

Lechwe

Looks like a cross between an Impala and a waterbuck. Lives mainly in swamps and lagoons. Height at shoulder: approx. 32 inches (82cm). Weight: approx. 265 pounds (120kg). Good horn length 24 inches (61cm).

 

Nyala

Looks like a mixture of a young kudu and a bushbuck, but with characteristic orange-coloured “stockings". Height at shoulder: approx. 41 inches (105cm). Weight: approx. 285 pounds (130kg). Age: up to 8 years, Good horn length 27 inches (69cm).

 

Bontebok

Was named by Dutch settlers after its characteristically coloured coat, meaning "pied" or "variegated" buck. It nearly became extinct and is at home only in the southwestern Cape. Both sexes bear horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 35 inches (90cm). Weight: approx. 140 pounds (64kg). Age: up to 8 years, Good horn length 15 inches (38cm).

 

Blesbok

Looks very similar to the bontebok, but it is smaller, has a lighter coat and is more prolific Both sexes bear horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 37 inches (95cm). Weight: approx. 175 pounds (80kg). Age: up to 9 years, Good horn length 16 inches (41cm).

 

Bushbbuck

Easily recognised by its white collar, the bushbuck is at home in thick bush and close to water. It is aggressive, brave and quite dangerous. It will tackle leopard, dogs and even human beings. Height at shoulder: approx. 31 inches (80cm). Weight: approx. 120 pounds (54kg). Age: up to 9 years,Good horn length 15 inches (38cm).

 

Impala

The Impala is the most prolific antelope in South Africa. Only the ram bears horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 35 inches (90cm). Weight: approx. 140 pounds (65kg). Age: up to 9 years, Good horn length 24 inches (61cm).

 

Reedbuck

As its name denotes it is at home in areas rich in reeds. But it does not like to go into water. It can be recognised by a characteristic whistle. Only the ram bears horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 35 inches (90cm). Weight: approx. 155 pounds (70kg). Age: up to 9 years, Good horn length 14 inches (36cm).

 

Mountain Reedbuck

Is at home in mountainous regions and lives in small groups. It is smaller and shyer than the reedbuck. Only the ram bears horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 29 inches (75cm). Weight: approx. 55 pounds (25kg). Age: up to 8 years, Good horn length 7 inches (18cm).

 

Springbok

The national animal of South Africa has an amazing ability to jump vertically as high as 10 feet (3m) and horizontally as far as 16 feet (5m). Both sexes bear horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 29 inches (75cm). Weight: approx. 77 pounds (35kg). Age: up to 10 years, Good horn length 14 inches (36cm).

 

Rhebok

Lives in large groups, is small, aggressive and bravely defends its territory. Height at shoulder: approx. 29 inches (75cm). Weight: approx. 48 pounds (22kg). Age: up to 9 years, Good horn length 8 inches (20cm).

 

Oribi

An elegant golden-coloured antelope that can be found in grassy landscapes that are rich in water. Height at shoulder: approx. 25 pounds (65cm). Weight: approx. 8 pounds (20kg). Age: up to 13 years, Good horn length 6 inches (15cm).

 

Klipspringer

Lives only on rocky hills and mountains, generally in groups. It is both a grazer and browser. Height at shoulder: approx.23 inches (60cm). Weight: approx. 35 pounds (16kg). Age: up to 8 years, Good horn length 4 inches (10cm).

 

Cape Grysbok

Some trackers call it the grease buck because of its tendency take of with short dashes of speed. Looks like a steenbok but is a very shy animal that comes out only at night. Live in dense bush. Height at shoulder: approx. 22 inches (55cm). Weight: approx. 26 pounds (12kg). Good horn length 3 inches (8cm).

 

Steenbok

Lives in pairs, but only the buck bears horns. Its habitat is the steppe and open woodland . Needs very little water and is active during the day. Height at shoulder: approx. 19 inches (50cm). Weight: approx. 26 pounds (12kg). Age: up to 6 years, Good horn length 4.5 inches (11cm).

 

Grey Duiker

Only the buck bears horns. It lives in woodland and in grassland with thickets. It is active mainly at night and lives in pairs. Height at shoulder: approx. 19 inches (50cm). Weight: approx. 26 pounds (12kg). Age: up to 9 years, Good horn length 4.5 inches (11cm).

 

Red Duiker

Lives in thick bush, is extremely shy and is recognisable by the long tuft of hair between its ears. Both sexes bear horns. Height at shoulder: approx. 17 inches (45cm). Weight: approx. 26 pounds (12kg). Age: up to 9 years, Good horn length 3 inches (8cm).

 

Suni

This tiny antelope can be found only in certain areas of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Northern Province. Only the bucks bear horn. Height at shoulder: approx. 15 inches (40cm). Weight: up to 16 pounds (8kg). Good horn length 2 inches (5cm).

 

Blue Duiker

The smallest antelope in South Africa. Lives in dense woodland, mainly in the eastern parts of the country. Height at shoulder: approx. 12 inches (30cm). Weight: up to 11 pounds (5kg). Age: up to 9 years. Good horn length 2 inches (5cm).

 

Warthog

Has a disproportionately large head compared to the rest of the body. The female has two warts on either side of its head; the male has four. When it trots, it holds its tail upright like antennae. When it feeds it often goes down on its knees, as if praying for its meal. Height at shoulder: approx. 29 inches (75cm). Weight: 155 to 220 pounds (70-100kg). Age: up to 20 years. Speed: 30 - 50 km/h, Good tusk length 14 inches (36cm).

 

Bush Pig

Looks similar to its domesticated cousin and lives in groups of 5 to 20 in thick bush, woodland or forests. It is aggressive and known to have attacked human beings with serious consequences. Height at shoulder: approx. 31 inches (80cm). Weight: 120 to 165 pounds (55-75kg). Age: up to 20 years. Good tusk length 5 inches (12cm).

 

Black-backed Jackal

Can be found on the open plains and lives on reptiles, birds, birds' eggs, small mammals and carrion. Can often be seen during the day. Height at shoulder: approx. 15 inches (40cm). Weight: approx. 22 pounds (10kg). Age: up to 10 years, Speed: 34 mph (55km/h).
